Big part of our European waste management business is the production and combustion of so-called SRF’s. These are produced from waste with high heat value which otherwise would end on landfill sites or would be burned in incinerators. These SRF’s are used to replace coal as it has only 33% of coal’s carbon emission and thus can effectively reduce the environmental impacts of fuel usage. Nowadays, German cement plants in average produce 70% of their energy with SRF and not with coal anymore. The so-called Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR) shall be increased to min. 85-90% in 2050 to reach their climate targets. This is a great achievement which is largely promoted by German environmental protection companies like REMONDIS. In addition, compared to incinerators, the facilities which are burning SRF can increase thei energy conversion efficiency from 20% to 40%, and can lower the treatment cost for air pollution control and fly / bottom ash by up to 50%.
REMONDIS Taiwan, with the support of the parent company’s full range of experiences in Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies and plant operation in Germany, plans to invest into the SRF market in Taiwan. We are targeting Taiwan’s combustible waste in municipal solid waste and industrial waste, which is estimated to be 41% of currently incinerated waste. In addition, we always plan to customize the equipment and processes that best meet the needs of Taiwan. We are offering to provide integrated services from collection to treatment, and to operate a professional, safe and hygienic SRF plant.
If producing waste on a daily basis is unavoidable for humans, it is of great importance that we develop the best use of the waste for social and environmental benefits. Moreover, we must upgrade our mindset from waste management to resource management, in order to recycle the resources and maximize their economic value. REMONDIS Group, the parent company of REMONDIS Taiwan in Germany, operates more than 800 selfowned waste treatment plants worldwide, including mechanical and biological waste treatment (MBT) plants, bioenergy plants, hazardous waste incinerators, municipal solid waste incinerators, resource recyclables recycling centers and many others.

At REMONDIS Taiwan, we are convinced that the energy transition to renewable energy sources can only succeed when all renewable energy sources are contributing their power optimally and efficiently. Biogas is one of these sources! After collection and treatment, biowaste is converted into biogas and digestate, which can be derived into products such as green energy and high-quality fertilizers, making full use of the resources. Biogas has very good combustion characteristics and can be used for power generation, heating, as fuel and other energy applications; while digestate can be used as organic fertilizer or soil amendment for agricultural purposes, effectively replacing chemical fertilizers and improving soil acidification. The green electricity is being pumped into industry applications and the nutrition is turned back to the soils to create a regional circular economy and achieve maximal resource sustainability.
REMONDIS Taiwan is part of the bigger RETHMANN group which includes the Reterra and ReFood-activities. Together, we are treating more than 3 million tons of organic waste every year in composting-, biomass power- and biogas plants. The RETHMANN group started investing in biowaste treatment plants, including biogas plants, more than 30 years ago. We at REMONDIS Taiwan are happy that we have direct access and support from the German headquarter to transfer biogas treatment technologies and know-how to Taiwan. We are planning to invest in that field in Taiwan to help building up the market as soon as possible. We are targeting Taiwan’s biowaste, such as household kitchen waste, agricultural waste (e.g., manure, slurry) and commercial food waste (e.g., retail food waste). We are offering to provide integrated services from collection to treatment, and to operate professional, safe, and hygienic biogas plants for at least 15 to 20 years.
